Cardboard Utopia was started from the belief that the best, most cherished games are the ones that engage you through gameplay, story, and characters. Games that are not just flashy experiences that leave your thoughts once you put down the controller, but make you think, plan, question and discuss. These are the things that create memories for future years. These are the types of games we make.

Founded in Montreal, Quebec, the game development capital of Canada, we are currently developing a Tactical JRPG that plays off our love of classic games like Shining Force and Final Fantasy Tactics, but with a modern, boardgame twist.

World Backstory

The Story of Lumus and L'Ombra, the Twin Worlds

When CELESTA bore the stars into the universe, It sent countless worlds spinning through the universe. Among these were The Twins - the planet Lumus and its sister world L'Ombra. These two worlds shared many similarities, but they were also very different.

Lumus was a world of light and warmth, green and full of life. L'Ombra was a dark place, cold and scarred by huge barren plains. Both worlds were inhabited by people; the people of Lumus were called the Lumen. They were farmers and hunters, who lived simple, carefree lives and wanted for nothing. The people of L'Ombra were called the L'Ombren. They studied science and philosophy, dreaming of unlocking the secrets of the universe.

In Its infinite wisdom, CELESTA saw that the differences between these two sister worlds posed a danger to each other and It decided that they should forever be divided. CELSTA cast a great Veil between The Twins, so that neither planet's children might ever discover their cousins in the other world.

The L'Ombren learned many secrets in their pursuit of ultimate knowledge, secrets which gave them power beyond the Lumen’s wildest dreams. Some say, they had become almost as wise and powerful as CELESTA Itself. But they were unhappy; they longed for a world of light and warmth - a world like Lumus.  They searched the heavens and somehow they found clues which led them to a great discovery. Lumus was hidden no more. The L'Ombren defied the creator – they used their wisdom and power to pierce CELESTA’s veil and travel between the worlds.

When the first L'Ombren explorers arrived, the people of Lumus welcomed them with open arms. In return, the L'Ombren brought many wonders to their cousins, who hailed them as Prophets and Magicians. But the power of their secrets corrupted the Lumen, awakening greed and strife within them. A terrible Magik War followed, threatening reality itself. CELESTA was displeased and caused a Great Catastrophe, collapsing the gate between the worlds once more. The powers of the L'Ombren Prophets became the stuff of myth and legend.

Over centuries, what remained of the Prophets' relics were gathered by priests of the Shadow Temple, for fear that they might become lost to the ages. Now the Lumen have entered a new renaissance; great minds have deciphered the knowledge of the L'Ombren and their wonders have graced the world again… but the words of the Prophets echo a warning – “Time is a loop; what was once will be again”. There are rumblings of a second Great Magik War in the making... a war that might again shake the foundations of Lumen and bring a second catastrophe.

Zodiarc Relics

In the beginning, there was only darkness. CELESTA created the Zodiarc Mirror so that It might gaze upon His/Herself. What CELESTA saw was exceedingly beautiful, and was greatly pleased. CELESTA began to create other things, eventually giving birth to the whole universe. It noticed that the reflection of its creations in the Zodiarc Mirror appeared brighter and more beautiful than even their true appearance. This enraged CELESTA; in a fit of jealousy, CELESTA shattered the Zodiarc Mirror, showering the young worlds of the cosmos with divine fragments.

The Zodiarc Mirror fragments that fell were the Birth Stones, which varied in properties and appearance. As the most valuable objects on L'Ombra, huge mines were built to extract Birth Stones, often ruining the land in the process. In time, the L'Ombren learned to harness the power of the Birth Stones, combining them with machinery to create wonders of technology and devastating weapons of war.

Eventually, the world of L’Ombra became ravaged by generations of Birth Stone mining and now is almost uninhabitable.
